Eight years ago, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starred in "Rampage," a movie based on the classic arcade game where giant monsters smash cities. On the surface, it looked like a fun, mindless blockbuster. Giant gorilla, giant wolf, giant lizard, and The Rock punching them. It made over $400 million worldwide, so by Hollywood math, it was a win.
But looking back, "Rampage" actually hid a bigger, more troubling story about Johnson's career. At the time, he was the biggest movie star on the planet. He could have made anything. Yet he kept choosing projects that felt like they came from a corporate algorithm. "Rampage" was the perfect example. It was a video game adaptation nobody asked for, based on a game with no story, turned into a generic action movie with a "save the world" plot.
The movie itself was fine. Critics gave it a passing grade, and audiences enjoyed the chaos. But it showed a pattern. Johnson was playing the same character again: a tough guy with a soft heart who cracks jokes while saving the day. "Rampage" was fun, but it was also safe. It hinted that Johnson was more interested in building a brand than taking risks.
Now, years later, Johnson has admitted he got tired of that formula. He has talked about wanting to make different kinds of movies. But "Rampage" remains a perfect snapshot of where his career was at that moment. It was a hit, but it was also a warning sign that even the biggest star can get stuck in a giant, CGI-filled rut.
