Bungie's major June update for Destiny 2 has been pushed back, and while it is still roughly a month away, the details trickling out are painting a grim picture for the player base. Here is a rundown of what has been confirmed so far.
First, the update itself is not a new expansion. It is a mid-year patch designed to address long-standing issues and rework core systems. The most significant change involves the game's armor mod system. Bungie plans to overhaul how mods work, moving away from the current energy cost system to a simpler, more flexible setup. This sounds good on paper, but the trade-off is that many existing mods will be removed or consolidated. Players who spent hours grinding for specific seasonal mods may find their collections gutted.
Second, the update will introduce a new "Power" level system. The goal is to reduce the grind required to reach the cap for endgame activities. However, early reports suggest that while the climb will be shorter, the actual power difference between players will be flattened even more, making gear feel less impactful. This has drawn comparisons to the controversial "sunsetting" era.
Third, Bungie is finally addressing the "shader" economy. Shaders will become permanent unlocks rather than consumable items. This is a welcome change, but it comes years late and does little to fix the game's deeper problems with vault space and loot variety.
Finally, the update will include a new seasonal activity and a returning raid. The raid is expected to be a reprised version of a Destiny 1 classic, which has become a tired pattern for veteran players. The seasonal activity is described as a "horde mode" variant, which is another formula the franchise has leaned on heavily.
the June update feels like a bandage on a wound that needs surgery. It fixes some small annoyances but does not address the core complaints about stale content, repetitive gameplay loops, and a lack of meaningful rewards. With the update delayed, Bungie has more time to polish it, but the community is left wondering if polish is enough.
