A proposed California law that would force video game publishers to keep their online titles functional even after official server shutdowns has passed a key committee vote. The bill, which now heads to the full Assembly for consideration, aims to address the growing problem of "abandoned" digital games that become unplayable when companies turn off their servers.
Under the legislation, publishers would be required to release an "independent" play patch or provide full refunds to consumers when they decide to end online support for a game. The patch would need to allow the game to function without connecting to the publisher's servers, essentially preserving the core experience for players who already purchased the title. If a publisher fails to offer such a patch, they would have to refund all purchases made within the previous 30 days.
Supporters argue that consumers are increasingly buying digital games that can become worthless overnight. They point to recent high-profile shutdowns where players lost access to games they spent hundreds of dollars on. Critics, however, warn that the requirement could be technically difficult or expensive for older games, and might discourage companies from releasing online-only titles in California altogether.
The bill now moves to the Assembly floor for debate. If passed, it would set a significant precedent for digital consumer rights in the United States.
