Greg Zeschuk, co-founder of BioWare, has spoken publicly for the first time since the studio's closure, pointing a finger at executives he says never made a game themselves. In a candid interview, Zeschuk traced the studio's decline back to its acquisition by EA and the events that followed.
He described the leveraged buyout as the "final nail in the coffin" for the company he helped build. According to Zeschuk, the people making the biggest decisions lacked the hands-on experience of actually creating games, and that disconnect shaped the studio's fate.
Zeschuk also pushed back against the idea that a great studio can be rebuilt from scratch. He argued that success does not come from assembling "random people and AI" and expecting lightning to strike twice. The chemistry, institutional knowledge, and shared history that define a studio like BioWare cannot simply be manufactured or replaced, he said.
His comments add to a growing conversation about how large corporate owners manage creative teams. For Zeschuk, the lesson is clear: studios thrive when the people in charge understand the craft, and they fall when that understanding disappears.
