Glen Schofield, the veteran game developer behind some of the most iconic first-person shooters in history, has announced his retirement from the video game industry. After 36 years of shaping the medium, Schofield is stepping away from active game development, though he remains optimistic about the future of big-budget games.
Schofield is best known for co-creating the Dead Space franchise and leading the development of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. His career also includes founding Striking Distance Studios, where he helmed the survival horror title The Callisto Protocol. In a recent interview, Schofield reflected on his long run, saying that while the industry has changed dramatically, he believes triple-A games will make a comeback.
"The passion is still there, but the way games are made now is different," Schofield said. He pointed to the rising costs, longer development cycles, and pressure from publishers as factors that pushed him toward retirement. Still, he argued that the current slump in big-budget releases is temporary. "Triple-A will be back. It has to be. Players still want those big experiences."
Schofield did not rule out consulting or mentoring younger developers, but he made it clear that leading a full-scale production is no longer in his plans. His departure marks the end of an era for a generation of gamers who grew up on his visceral, cinematic shooters. For now, he plans to spend time with family and explore other creative outlets.
