Rockstar Games is changing how players listen to music in Grand Theft Auto VI. For the first time in the series, the radio will not be locked to vehicles. Players will be able to carry the in-game radio with them on foot through the streets of Leonida, using their in-game smartphone to keep the music playing wherever they go.
The feature marks a major shift for a franchise that has always tied its famous radio stations to cars, boats, and helicopters. In previous titles, stepping out of a vehicle meant leaving the music behind. GTA VI removes that limit, letting players walk, swim, or simply stand still while a station keeps running through their phone.
Alongside the portable radio, the game will include at least six radio stations and a selection of on-demand podcasts. The podcast format is also a first for the main series. Rather than waiting for a scheduled block of talk radio, players can choose an episode and listen whenever they want, whether they are driving through Vice City or wandering the beaches on foot.
Rockstar has not yet confirmed the full station lineup or the hosts behind each show. Music has always been a core part of the GTA identity, and the move to portable listening suggests the studio wants players to stay connected to the soundtrack at all times. More details are expected as the launch approaches.
