Chris Hays, a longtime id Software developer who worked on Doom and Quake, has some blunt words for Microsoft's gaming division. In a recent interview, Hays said that Xbox's top leadership simply doesn't understand what makes games work as an art form. He claims that entire departments inside the company have been "gutted," leaving teams without the people who actually knew how to build compelling experiences.
Hays didn't hold back. He argued that the people making decisions at Xbox are too focused on metrics, subscription numbers, and quarterly reports. That approach, he says, kills the creative spark that games need. He pointed to the layoffs and studio closures that have hit the industry hard over the last couple of years. According to Hays, the problem isn't just about money. It's about a fundamental lack of respect for the craft.
He also said that the people who remain are often overworked and under-supported. When you strip out experienced artists, designers, and programmers, you lose the institutional knowledge that makes a studio special. Hays believes that Xbox's current leadership treats games like content to be consumed, not like art to be appreciated. That mindset, he argues, is why so many recent releases feel safe, samey, and forgettable.
The veteran developer's comments echo what many insiders have been saying quietly for years. Microsoft bought a lot of studios, but buying talent doesn't mean you know how to use it. Hays says the proof is in the games. When you gut the people who made those studios great, you end up with a catalog that looks impressive on paper but feels hollow when you actually play it. Whether Xbox listens to that criticism remains to be seen.
