The Bureau of Indian Standards has published a new framework for rating video and digital games, designated IS19690:2026. While the core age rating structure remains familiar, the updated standard introduces stricter obligations for publishers and platforms operating in the country.
The new guidelines require that all games sold or distributed in India carry a clear age rating label and specific content descriptors on the packaging and digital storefronts. These descriptors must explain why a game received a particular rating, such as violence, language, or sexual content. The goal is to give parents and consumers more transparency before purchase.
One key change is the emphasis on mandatory compliance. Previously, the system relied heavily on voluntary adoption by the industry. The 2026 standard shifts toward making these labels a formal requirement, with potential consequences for non-compliance. This aligns India more closely with global practices seen in the US, Europe, and Japan.
The Bureau also clarified that the rating process will be handled by a designated body, though details on enforcement mechanisms and penalties are still being finalized. Game developers and distributors are advised to review their current labeling practices to ensure they meet the new standard before the implementation deadline.
Industry observers note that while the rules do not change the fundamental age categories, the added legal weight could affect how quickly international games launch in India. Smaller studios may face higher costs for certification, while larger publishers already accustomed to global rating systems will likely adapt with minimal disruption.
The standard is expected to take full effect later this year, giving the industry a transition period to update packaging, digital store listings, and internal compliance procedures.
