The Pokémon phenomenon had already taken Japan by storm, but in 1998, Nintendo faced a tough challenge: convincing American audiences to care about a game about collecting and battling cute monsters. Looking back at the company's E3 presentation that year, it's almost jarring to see how raw and uncertain the whole thing felt.
The footage shows a small, unassuming booth with a modest TV setup. No massive light shows, no celebrity endorsements, just a handful of Nintendo staffers trying to explain the concept of Pokémon to confused attendees. Kids and adults alike stared at the screen, watching two Game Boy units connected by a link cable. The presenters had to walk people through the basic idea: you catch creatures, train them, and trade with friends. To modern eyes, it looks almost primitive. There were no flashy trailers, no dramatic music, just a simple demonstration of a black-and-green portable game.
What's striking is how many people walked past without stopping. The booth wasn't crowded. Some visitors seemed genuinely puzzled by the whole thing. "You catch them and then what?" one person asked. The answer was simple: you keep catching, keep battling, and keep trading. That was it.
Of course, we know how the story ended. Pokémon Red and Blue became a cultural explosion, leading to cards, an anime, movies, and a franchise that still prints money today. But watching that old E3 footage, you get a sense of how fragile the whole thing was. If Nintendo had fumbled the American launch, the series might have remained a Japanese curiosity. Instead, a small booth with a Game Boy and a link cable changed gaming forever.
