Puzzles, Lore & Inspiration: Get Glimpse of Rusty Lake Development

Rusty Lake has built a reputation for surreal, atmospheric puzzle games that feel like a fever dream you can step into. The studio's latest release, Servant of the Lake, continues that tradition, and we had the chance to ask co-founder Robin Ras about how the team approaches its signature blend of cryptic storytelling and brain-teasing mechanics.

Ras explained that the game's development started not with a mechanic, but with a feeling. The team wanted to capture the unease of a quiet, isolated setting, which naturally led to the idea of a servant bound to a strange household. From there, the narrative grew organically, with each puzzle meant to reveal a small piece of the larger mystery rather than exist as a standalone challenge.

When asked about the balance between lore and gameplay, Ras admitted it is a constant push and pull. The studio's fans are deeply invested in the overarching Rusty Lake universe, so every new title has to offer fresh clues without drowning the player in exposition. The trick, he said, is to make the environment itself tell the story. A locked drawer, a faded photograph, a strange stain on the wall - these objects should feel like they belong to a world that existed before you arrived.

As for the puzzles themselves, Ras noted that the team often starts with a visual or a single interaction, then builds outward. They test each one to ensure it feels fair but not obvious. The goal is to give players that moment of sudden clarity, where everything clicks into place, even if the full meaning stays just out of reach. That ambiguity, he added, is part of the charm. Rusty Lake does not hand over easy answers, but it always invites you to look a little closer.
