Fans of the original Rugrats video games from the 1990s might feel a warm glow when they first boot up "Rugrats: Retro Rewind." The game faithfully recreates the look and feel of those old platformers, complete with chunky pixel art, bouncy sound effects, and levels based on classic episodes. For a few minutes, it is a pleasant trip back to childhood.
But that warm feeling fades quickly. Once the initial rush of recognition wears off, you are left with a game that feels shallow and repetitive. The controls are stiff, the level design is simple to the point of being boring, and there is very little new here to hold your attention. You run, you jump, you collect items, and you move on to the next nearly identical stage. The charm of seeing Tommy, Chuckie, and the rest of the gang in action can only carry the experience so far.
"Rugrats: Retro Rewind" will definitely delight fans who want to revisit the old games for an afternoon. It is a faithful tribute to a specific era of licensed platformers. However, there is not enough substance or innovation to make it a game that people will want to play again and again. It is a short burst of nostalgia, not a lasting adventure.
