The underwater survival game Subnautica 2 has entered early access, and it is already making waves with a strange mix of narrative weight and bizarre marine life. Players expecting a quiet, open-ended exploration experience might be surprised to find the game leaning harder into story elements from the very start. The opening hours are dense with radio chatter, logs, and environmental clues that push you along a specific path. Some fans have noted that this feels a bit heavy for an early access title, where many players just want to swim around and build bases without a plot breathing down their neck.
But the real draw here is the creatures. Subnautica 2 is packed with weird little guys. From glowing jellyfish that pulse in the dark to crab-like things that scuttle sideways and hiss, the alien ocean is full of life that is equal parts cute and unsettling. There is a fish that inflates into a spiky ball when you get too close. Another one mimics the sound of a human cough. The developers clearly had fun designing these things, and it shows. Each new biome introduces a handful of oddballs that make you stop and stare.
The early access build is rough around the edges. Some textures are placeholder, and the framerate can stutter in denser areas. But the core loop of diving, scavenging, and avoiding being eaten is as addictive as ever. If you can tolerate the plot nudges and the occasional bug, there is a lot to love here. Just try not to get too attached to any one fish. They have a habit of disappearing into something bigger.
