‘The Legend of Zelda’ live-action film gets official title, new release date

Nintendo has finally put a name to its long-awaited live-action take on Hyrule. The film, previously referred to only as a Legend of Zelda project, will now be officially called The Legend of Zelda. Along with the title reveal, the company also locked in a new release date, pushing the movie back slightly from its original window.

The announcement came as part of a quiet update rather than a full showcase. Nintendo confirmed the film will now hit theaters on March 26, 2027. That shifts the release from the earlier placeholder of late 2026, giving the production team more time to finish the visual effects and post-production work. The movie is being made in partnership with Sony Pictures, which will handle global distribution.

Details on the plot are still thin. What is known is that the story will draw directly from the core games, following a young hero named Link as he tries to stop the evil Ganon from claiming the Triforce. The film is being directed by Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner series and the recent Planet of the Apes installment. Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto is producing, which suggests the company intends to keep a tight grip on how the world and its characters are portrayed.
