For years, the market has been flooded with apps and puzzles claiming to keep your mind sharp. But a new study suggests that only one type of free online brain game actually shows a measurable effect on lowering dementia risk. Researchers analyzed data from thousands of older adults and found that a specific cognitive training exercise, often available at no cost, was linked to a significant reduction in the likelihood of developing the disease.
The game in question is a simple speed-of-processing task. Players are asked to identify and locate a target object on a screen while ignoring distractions, and the difficulty increases as they improve. Unlike crossword puzzles or Sudoku, which focus on vocabulary or logic, this game trains the brain to process visual information faster. The study followed participants for over a decade and found that those who completed at least ten sessions of this training had a 29 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who did not.
Experts caution that no single activity can guarantee prevention, but they emphasize that this type of targeted training appears to build "cognitive reserve." The key, they say, is the adaptive nature of the game, which constantly challenges the brain to work harder. Other popular brain games, such as memory matching or word games, did not show the same protective effect in the study. The findings suggest that when it comes to brain health, the specific type of mental workout matters more than just staying busy.
