Waiting around in a parked car is rarely anyone's idea of fun. Volkswagen believes it has a solution that could make those idle minutes far less tedious. The automaker is rolling out a feature that turns the vehicle's infotainment screen into a gaming console, offering drivers and passengers a way to pass the time while the car is stationary.

The system launches with a library of roughly 20 games, and it uses a smartphone as the controller. Players connect their phone wirelessly to the car's display, then use the touchscreen on the device to steer, jump, or shoot depending on the title. The setup is designed to work without extra hardware, so there is no need to carry a separate gamepad or console.

The catch is that this convenience comes with a recurring cost. Volkswagen plans to charge a subscription fee for access to the game collection. That means owners will pay monthly or yearly to keep playing, even though the hardware and screen are already built into the vehicle. The company has not yet confirmed exact pricing for every market.

The feature will arrive first on select electric models, with more vehicles expected to follow through software updates. Volkswagen is positioning the service as part of a broader push to generate revenue beyond the initial sale of a car. For now, the games only work when the vehicle is parked, a safety measure meant to prevent distraction while driving. Whether drivers will embrace another subscription remains an open question.
