We’re still waiting for the first truly great Game of Thrones video game

For years now, fans of George R.R. Martin's world have been waiting for the one video game that finally gets it right. We have seen strategy titles, telltale adventures, and even a few mobile games set in the Seven Kingdoms. Yet, despite the massive popularity of the TV show and the books, no developer has delivered a truly great, sprawling Game of Thrones video game. The kind that lets you just exist in that world.

What we really want is simple. We want an open-world Westeros. Not a linear story where you play as a character from the show, but a game where you create your own. Imagine starting as a nobody in Flea Bottom, or a minor lord's son in the Reach. You could ride from Winterfell to King's Landing, not through a loading screen, but across the actual map. You would see the Twins, pass through the Neck, and cross the Trident. The game would not need to follow the plot of the books or the show. It could run parallel to it, or even take place during a different era, like the Dance of the Dragons.

The problem is that most licensed games try to cram the story into a box. They force you to relive the Red Wedding or fight as Jon Snow. That is fine for a few hours, but it does not capture the feeling of the world. The best part of Westeros is the politics, the travel, and the danger. A good game would let you build a house, manage resources, and make enemies. It would have a dynamic system where seasons last for years, and winter actually changes the gameplay. Until someone makes that game, we are just stuck waiting. And hoping.
