The price of gaming has climbed steadily, and it is not just about inflation. New consoles now launch at premium price points, and while games themselves have not jumped as dramatically, the overall cost of the hobby is undeniably higher. This week, we are looking at why that is happening and, more importantly, how you can keep playing without breaking the bank.
A big part of the console price hike comes down to manufacturing. Chips are more complex, storage is faster, and cooling systems are heavier. The cost of raw materials and shipping has also gone up, and companies are not willing to eat those losses. They are passing them straight to the buyer. On the software side, games have stayed relatively flat in price for years, even though development budgets have exploded. A $70 game in 2024 is not that different from a $60 game in 2015 in terms of raw dollars, but the cost to make it is often triple what it used to be.
So, where does that leave you? The trick is to be patient. Do not buy at launch. Wait a few months and the price will drop. Look for digital sales, which happen constantly on every platform. Also, consider buying used or refurbished consoles. They work just as well and cost a fraction of the new price. Subscription services are another option, giving you a huge library for a monthly fee. Gaming can still be affordable, but you have to be smart about it.
