When people hear the name Rockstar Games, they almost always think of one thing: Grand Theft Auto. And sure, that series has defined open-world gaming for two decades. But the studio behind Los Santos and Vice City has a much deeper catalog, and some of its best work never involved stealing cars or building criminal empires. If you are willing to dig past the obvious, there are some truly memorable experiences waiting.
One of the most overlooked titles is The Warriors. Based on the 1979 cult film, this beat-em-up captures the gritty chaos of New York street gangs with a surprising amount of tactical depth. The co-op mode alone is worth the price of admission, letting you and a friend smash bottles over rival gang members' heads while the movie's iconic soundtrack plays in the background. It is rough, loud, and incredibly fun.
Then there is Bully, which often gets dismissed as GTA for kids. That is a mistake. Set in the fictional Bullworth Academy, the game trades guns for slingshots and go-karts, but it keeps all of Rockstar's sharp satire and attention to detail. The writing is genuinely funny, and the schoolyard politics feel more relatable than any heist. It is a smaller world, but every corner of it is packed with personality.
For racing fans, Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition remains a high-water mark for arcade street racing. It is fast, aggressive, and has a customization system that was ahead of its time. Unlike the more simulation-focused titles, this one is all about split-second decisions and near-misses in traffic. The sense of speed still holds up today.
If you prefer something with a darker tone, Manhunt is a survival horror game that pushes boundaries even by modern standards. It is not for everyone, and the stealth-based violence is unapologetically brutal. But as a pure exercise in tension and dread, it is unmatched. The sound design alone will make you paranoid.
Finally, there is State of Emergency, a chaotic riot simulator that is pure arcade nonsense. It is shallow, repetitive, and completely unpolished. Yet somehow, it is also a blast to play for short bursts. It feels like a tech demo for Rockstar's later ambition, but it has a raw energy that the polished modern titles lack.
None of these games will replace GTA or Red Dead in your heart. But they show a side of Rockstar that is more experimental, more willing to take risks. If you have a retro console or an emulator handy, give one of them a shot. You might be surprised.
