The Gothic 1 Remake had me instantly intrigued when it was announced, not only because the original holds a special place in RPG history, but because the early trailers promised a faithful yet modernized return to the colony of Khorinis. After spending dozens of hours with the PS5 version, I can say the core experience is still there, but it is brutally undercut by poor technical performance and some baffling design choices that feel stuck in the past.
On the positive side, the remake captures the gritty, unforgiving atmosphere of the original. The world feels alive with its faction politics, dangerous wildlife, and the constant threat of orc patrols. The combat system has been reworked into something more responsive than the original's clunky timing, though it still lacks the fluidity of modern action RPGs. The voice acting and soundtrack are strong, and the story beats that made the original a cult classic remain intact.
However, the PS5 version suffers from frequent frame rate drops, especially in the larger outdoor areas and during combat with multiple enemies. Texture pop-in is noticeable, and the loading times, while better than the original, still feel long for a current-gen console. More frustrating are the quest design and navigation issues. The remake keeps the original's lack of hand-holding, but without a proper quest log or map markers, players can easily get lost or miss critical objectives. This might appeal to purists, but for most players, it feels like a regression.
The remake also introduces some new mechanics that feel half-baked. The crafting system is overly complex without proper tutorials, and the inventory management is a chore on a controller. The AI of companions and enemies is inconsistent, with allies sometimes blocking doorways and enemies occasionally freezing mid-combat.
the Gothic 1 Remake on PS5 is a game for dedicated fans who can overlook its flaws. It delivers the same brutal, rewarding RPG experience that made the original legendary, but it does so with a rough presentation that undermines its potential. If you can tolerate the technical hiccups and the old-school design philosophy, there is a great game here. But for newcomers or those expecting a polished modern remake, this is a frustrating reminder that some classics are best left in the past.
