Mac users who have long wanted to play Windows-only titles now have another option. A new free application called MaPC is designed to let Mac owners run Windows games purchased through Steam and Epic, opening up a library that has traditionally been out of reach on Apple hardware.
The tool is built specifically for Macs powered by Apple Silicon processors, meaning it targets the M-series chips that Apple has shipped in recent years rather than older Intel-based machines. That focus makes sense, since Apple Silicon has become the standard across the company's computer lineup and brings its own set of compatibility challenges for Windows software.
Running Windows games on a Mac has never been simple. Users have typically relied on workarounds such as virtual machines, compatibility layers, or cloud streaming services, each with its own tradeoffs in performance, cost, or setup complexity. MaPC aims to simplify that process by handling the translation layer for users and connecting directly to the two largest PC game storefronts.
For gamers who own libraries on Steam or Epic but also use a Mac, the appeal is obvious. Instead of maintaining a separate Windows PC or paying for a streaming subscription, they can attempt to run their existing purchases on the hardware they already own. The fact that the app is free lowers the barrier further, letting users test compatibility without spending money upfront.
Performance will vary depending on the game and the specific chip inside the Mac. Demanding titles may not run smoothly, and some games could fail to launch entirely, which is a common limitation of translation-based approaches. Users should temper expectations and check community reports before assuming a particular game will work.
Still, the release adds momentum to a growing effort to make Macs more viable for gaming. Apple has improved its graphics hardware considerably with each chip generation, and tools like MaPC suggest that software support is slowly catching up. For now, the app offers a low-risk way for curious Mac owners to experiment with their Windows game libraries.
