Students from the South and West Washtenaw Consortium's Video Game Design and Development program have been named finalists in the international Games for Change Student Challenge. The competition recognizes student-created video games that focus on real-world issues and social impact.
The team includes Elizabeth Corn of Saline High School, Ben Gordon of Dexter High School, and Clara Baghdoian of Chelsea High School. Their project stood out among entries from across the globe, earning a spot in the final round of judging.
The Games for Change Student Challenge encourages young developers to use game design as a tool for learning and change. Students must create original games that address topics like health, the environment, or civic engagement. The Washtenaw team's project impressed judges with its creativity and its focus on a meaningful theme.
For the students, the recognition is a major achievement. It puts their work on an international stage and validates the skills they have built in the consortium's program. The program itself is a collaboration between several local school districts, giving students access to specialized training in game design, coding, and digital art.
The final results will be announced later this year. Regardless of the outcome, the team has already made a mark by showing that students from this region can compete with the best young developers in the world.
