July 2026 turned out to be a strange month for video games. We saw a handful of truly memorable releases that pushed their genres forward, but we also saw a few high-profile flops that made us question the developers' priorities. Here is a quick rundown of the month's standout titles and the ones you should probably skip.
On the positive side, the biggest winner was Starfall Protocol, a space-faring RPG that finally nailed the balance between deep tactical combat and a compelling, character-driven story. The game's branching narrative actually respects player choice, and the hand-crafted planets are a joy to explore. It is easily the most polished experience of the month and a strong contender for game of the year. Another bright spot was Neon Drift: Recharged, a racing game that ditches realistic physics for a slick, arcade-style feel. The new track editor is simple to use but offers deep customization, and the online multiplayer is buttery smooth. It is pure, uncomplicated fun.
However, not everything was sunshine. The biggest disappointment was Dungeon Forge: Siege, a co-op action game that launched with a shockingly small amount of content. The core combat loop is decent, but you will see every enemy type and boss within the first two hours. The promised "endless" mode is just a rehash of the same three maps with tougher enemies. It feels unfinished, and the lack of variety is a dealbreaker. We also have to mention Farming Simulator 2026, which, despite the yearly update, somehow feels more clunky and unintuitive than last year's version. The new weather system is more annoying than immersive, and the UI is a mess.
In short, if you are looking for something to play, grab Starfall Protocol or Neon Drift. If you are on the fence about the other two, wait for a patch or a deep discount.
