In a surprising twist, Nintendo has confirmed that its 2019 Labo VR Kit for the Switch will serve as a functional, low-cost alternative for experiencing upcoming Virtual Boy games. This announcement comes alongside the reveal that select titles from the infamous 1995 stereoscopic console will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service.
The Labo VR Kit, a series of cardboard constructs that turn the standard Switch console into a rudimentary virtual reality headset, was largely considered a niche product. However, it will now provide a pathway to play the historically significant Virtual Boy library without the need for the original, often expensive and cumbersome, hardware.
This move offers a nostalgic yet accessible solution for players curious about this unique chapter in gaming history. While the Labo VR experience is a far cry from modern high-end VR, its simple, hands-on design is a fittingly unconventional match for the red-and-black stereoscopic games of the Virtual Boy. It represents a clever reuse of existing technology, allowing a new generation to engage with these classic titles in a novel, if decidedly low-fidelity, way. The integration demonstrates Nintendo's continued willingness to repurpose its creative hardware experiments in unexpected and player-friendly fashion.
