Nintendo's Switch Online service has expanded its library of retro consoles with a surprising addition: the Virtual Boy. The infamous 32-bit tabletop system, known for its red-and-black stereoscopic 3D visuals and brief commercial life in the mid-90s, is now emulated for subscribers.
At launch, the service includes seven of the console's original titles. Players can experience the head-turning 3D of "Mario's Tennis," the puzzle action of "Virtual Boy Wario Land," and the frantic shooting of "Galactic Pinball." The initial lineup aims to showcase the unique, albeit niche, gameplay the hardware offered.
The release is set to grow significantly, with nine additional Virtual Boy games planned for future addition. This expanded library is particularly notable as it will include two titles that were never officially released during the system's original lifespan, offering a glimpse into what might have been for Nintendo's ambitious 3D experiment. This archival effort provides a new generation of players a chance to engage with a curious and often overlooked chapter in gaming history, all from the comfort of the modern Switch.
