We all know plenty of MMORPGs that emerged out of a video game franchise. World of Warcraft came from the Warcraft RTS games. The Sims Online came from a long-running life sim series. And we could cite a dozen or so sequels of MMOs without breaking a sweat. But that is not what this list is about. This list is about the reverse. It is about the games that spun off from MMORPGs, not the other way around.
It is rare for a massively multiplayer game to be so successful that it spawns its own single-player or smaller multiplayer titles. Yet it has happened. Some of these spin-offs are direct sequels that ditched the MMO label. Others are experimental side stories that took place in the same universe. A few are even card games or action RPGs that borrowed the setting and characters.
One of the most famous examples is RuneScape. That game gave us Old School RuneScape, which is technically a version of the same MMO but also a spin-off in its own right. Then there is Guild Wars 2, which is a direct sequel to the original Guild Wars. But Guild Wars itself was not a traditional MMO at launch. It was a hybrid. So that one is complicated.
Another strong example is Final Fantasy XIV. It is an MMO, but it has a single-player expansion called Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers that was praised for its story. More notably, the same developer released Final Fantasy XIV: The Art of Eorzea, a companion book, and a few mobile games based on the same world.
Then there is EVE Online. That game spawned EVE: Valkyrie, a virtual reality dogfighting game. It also inspired a board game called EVE: The Second Genesis and a few other smaller projects. The universe of EVE is deep enough to support these spin-offs.
World of Warcraft itself has a few spin-offs. Hearthstone started as a card game set in the Warcraft universe, but it was not directly an MMO spin-off. However, WoW also had a tabletop game and a few mobile apps. The most direct spin-off is probably the canceled World of Warcraft: The Board Game, which was a tabletop adaptation.
Other examples include MapleStory, which had a spin-off called MapleStory 2. That one was a different game entirely, with blocky graphics and a focus on building. It did not last long, but it was a true spin-off. There is also Phantasy Star Online 2, which spawned a few single-player games on consoles, though those are more like side stories.
The list goes on. It is not a long list, but it is an interesting one. These games prove that an MMO can be more than just a service. It can be a universe worth exploring in other formats.
