The shooter that Romero Games lost when Microsoft withdrew its support has secured a new publishing partner, according to studio founder John Romero. The Doom and Quake co-creator confirmed the news in a recent update, adding that ten former leads from the project have been brought back on board.
The game, which remains officially unannounced, was in development when Xbox pulled its funding earlier this year. The decision left the studio scrambling to keep the project alive. According to Romero, the team has now recovered its footing with the help of the new publisher and the return of key staff.
Romero did not name the publisher or share a release window. He also declined to describe the game itself, keeping the project under wraps for now. The rehiring of ten leads suggests the studio is rebuilding the core team that had been assembled before the funding was cut.
Romero Games is known for its work on the strategy title Empire of Sin, released in 2020. John Romero himself has a long history in the industry, having co-created Doom and Quake at id Software before founding his own studio. The news offers a rare positive turn for a project that appeared to be in trouble just months ago. Further details are expected as development continues.
