Russian officials have outlined a long term plan to expand the country's video game sector, aiming to increase its gross value added by six times within a decade. The target appears in the newly approved strategy for the development of Russia's creative economy, which places gaming among the priority areas for growth.
Gross value added measures the contribution an industry makes to the overall economy after subtracting the cost of inputs. Raising it sixfold would require steady expansion across game development, publishing, hardware, and related services. That means more studios, a larger workforce, and stronger domestic demand for Russian made titles.
The strategy also signals that the state intends to treat gaming as more than entertainment. Support could come through funding programs, tax incentives, and education initiatives designed to train programmers, artists, and designers. Analysts note that reaching such a goal will depend on access to technology, investment, and international markets, all of which face complications under current conditions.
Industry representatives have welcomed the attention but caution that ambitious numbers take time to materialize. Building a mature gaming ecosystem involves years of work, from small indie teams to large studios capable of producing globally competitive products. Whether the sixfold increase becomes reality will depend on how consistently the plan is funded and executed over the coming decade.
