Anthropic Adjusts Claude Code to Curb Game Cloning

Anthropic has confirmed a change to the system prompt for Claude Code on Opus 5.5 that steers the tool away from recreating existing video games. The adjustment follows growing concern from independent developers, some of whom have pulled playable demos after finding that their work could be approximated by the AI coding assistant.

The update does not block game development outright. Instead, it discourages the model from producing close copies of specific titles when users ask for something resembling a known release. Anthropic framed the move as a way to reduce direct imitation of copyrighted games while keeping the tool useful for original projects.

The change arrives after several indie creators reported that prompts could generate simplified versions of their games, including recognizable mechanics and visual styles. Some responded by removing public demos, citing unease about how easily their designs could be reproduced.

Developers remain divided. Some welcome the guardrail as a sensible limit, while others argue that prompts alone cannot resolve deeper questions about how generative tools interact with small studios and their intellectual property. Anthropic has not said whether further restrictions are planned.
