The FBI has taken a 21-year-old Florida man into custody, accusing him of stealing roughly $220,000 in cryptocurrency through malware disguised inside video games. Authorities say the suspect used the infected games to gain access to victims' digital wallets and siphon funds over several months.
According to court documents, the man allegedly embedded malicious code into modified versions of popular games. When unsuspecting players downloaded and ran these files, the malware would quietly scan their computers for crypto wallet credentials. Once located, the software would initiate unauthorized transfers, often moving small amounts to avoid immediate detection. The scheme reportedly targeted players in online gaming communities, where trust among users made it easier to distribute the tainted files.
The investigation began after multiple victims reported missing funds linked to game downloads from the same source. Federal agents traced the digital trail back to the suspect's residence in Florida. He now faces charges of wire fraud, computer intrusion, and money laundering. If convicted, he could face decades in prison.
This case highlights a growing trend where cybercriminals exploit the overlap between gaming and cryptocurrency. Security experts warn that modified game files remain a common vector for such attacks, urging players to only download software from official sources. The suspect is currently held without bond pending a federal court hearing.
