Bringing a Nintendo 3DS to a massive gaming convention in 2026 felt like a gamble. The handheld is long past its prime, and the StreetPass feature, which relies on local wireless signals between consoles, seemed like a relic from another era. But at Gamescom in Cologne, I decided to test it anyway.
The first hour was quiet. My Mii Plaza stayed empty, and I started to think the feature was truly dead. Then, walking through the crowded indie hall, the little green light blinked. One hit. Then another. By the end of the day, I had collected over forty StreetPass tags.
What surprised me most was who was carrying these old devices. It was not just nostalgic adults in their thirties. I saw teenagers with modded consoles, a group of friends sharing puzzle pieces, and even a few booths using StreetPass as a low-tech way to draw crowds. The feature worked exactly as it did in 2011, with no updates, no servers, just pure local radio waves.
The experience felt like a small time capsule. In an age of online matchmaking and cloud saves, there is something charming about bumping into strangers physically, swapping Miis without saying a word. Gamescom is loud, crowded, and overwhelming, but for a few hours, my 3DS turned it into a quiet social game of its own. StreetPass is not dead. It is just waiting for people who remember to turn it on.
