Federal prosecutors have charged a 21-year-old college student with using counterfeit video games on the Steam platform to drain cryptocurrency from unsuspecting victims. Zyaire Wilkins, a student from Texas, allegedly published several fake games on the popular gaming marketplace that secretly contained malware.
According to court documents, Wilkins' scheme involved uploading seemingly legitimate games to Steam. Once users downloaded and installed these titles, the hidden malware would activate and scan their computers for cryptocurrency wallets. The malicious software then siphoned funds from those wallets without the victims' knowledge.
Prosecutors say the operation infected thousands of computers worldwide. While not every infected user had crypto assets, investigators believe Wilkins managed to steal significant amounts from those who did. The exact total stolen has not been disclosed, but authorities describe the losses as substantial.
The FBI arrested Wilkins earlier this week following a months-long investigation that involved tracing digital transactions and working with Valve Corporation, the company that owns Steam. Law enforcement officials say this case highlights the growing threat of malware disguised as entertainment software.
Wilkins now faces multiple federal charges, including computer fraud and money laundering. If convicted, he could face decades in prison. A court hearing is scheduled for next week, where a judge will decide on bail conditions. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify all victims and trace the stolen cryptocurrency.
