Remakes and remasters are all the rage, but five classics from Nintendo are good enough that no one ever needs to bother trying to improve them. The industry keeps revisiting old favorites, polishing visuals and tweaking mechanics for modern audiences. Yet some games arrived fully formed, and time has done nothing to dull their edge.
Super Mario Bros. 3 remains the gold standard for 2D platforming. Its level design is tight, inventive, and endlessly replayable, with secrets tucked into every world. No coat of paint could improve what is already close to perfect.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past set the template for an entire genre. Its overworld is dense with discovery, its dungeons are clever without being cruel, and its pacing still feels remarkably modern.
Super Metroid turned isolation into atmosphere. The game trusts players to explore, get lost, and piece together a hostile world on their own. That confidence is rare and worth preserving exactly as it is.
Chrono Trigger, often cited among the greatest role-playing games ever made, blends a memorable cast with a time-travel story that respects player choice. Its combat still feels snappy, and its pacing has few rivals.
Finally, Super Mario 64 introduced three-dimensional movement with a freedom that still feels fresh. The castle hub and its playful challenges remain a masterclass in design.
These games do not need remakes. They need to be played as they are.
