The Five Hardest Game Boy Games to Find and What They Cost

The Five Hardest Game Boy Games to Find and What They Cost

The Game Boy changed handheld gaming forever, and plenty of people still have a shoebox of old cartridges tucked away in a closet. Most of those games are worth very little. A handful, though, have become genuine collector's items, and a lucky find can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

The rarest titles tend to share a few traits. They arrived late in the console's life, had tiny print runs, or were sold through limited channels. Some were never released outside Japan, which makes complete copies especially hard to track down. Condition matters enormously. A loose cartridge sells for far less than one with its original box and manual, and prices swing with demand.

At the top of most lists sits a competition cartridge from the early 1990s that was never sold in stores. Only a small number were produced, and surviving copies now change hands for four figures. Other scarce titles include a puzzle game with a limited European release, a Japan-only RPG, and a few promotional cartridges tied to contests and magazines. Prices for these range from roughly two hundred dollars to well over a thousand, depending on completeness and condition.

If you think you own one of these, check the label carefully. Reproductions and counterfeit carts are common, and authentic copies usually show specific manufacturing details. Before selling, compare recent sales rather than asking prices, since listings often exaggerate what a game actually brings.
