Call of Duty shrugs, reheats its leftovers with Black Ops remaster

Activision is once again digging into its vault of old hits. The company confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will soon be available as native versions for modern consoles. For years, players who wanted to revisit these classic first-person shooters on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X had to rely on backward compatibility or streaming. That changes now, though the price tag might sting.

The remasters are expected to run at higher resolutions and smoother frame rates than the original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases. However, early reports suggest these are not full ground-up rebuilds. Instead, they appear to be enhanced ports with minor tweaks to lighting and texture filtering. The core gameplay, maps, and campaign missions remain untouched.

Fans have mixed feelings. On one hand, the Black Ops series is beloved for its Cold War-era conspiracy plots and tight multiplayer maps like Nuketown and Firing Range. On the other hand, many expected a proper remaster collection similar to the Modern Warfare series treatment. Instead, Activision seems content to sell the same game again with a fresh coat of paint.

Pricing has not been officially announced, but industry insiders expect a full $60 or $70 tag per title. That is a tough sell for games that are over a decade old and available on older hardware for much less. The move feels like a safe bet for the publisher, which knows nostalgia sells. Whether players will pay premium prices for reheated content remains to be seen.
