Modern video games are nothing short of amazing. My son and I were playing through one of the latest Zeldas, which involve a mix of combat and puzzle-solving that's pretty much the hallmark of the series. The graphics are stunning, the world is vast, and the story is deep. But sometimes, after an hour of navigating complex menus and remembering button combos, I find myself missing the simple games from a simpler time.
I remember the Atari 2600. The games were basic. You had a paddle or a joystick, one button, and a single objective. There was no tutorial, no backstory, and no save points. You just played. Games like "Pong" or "Breakout" were pure reaction. You either hit the ball or you didn't. There was a certain honesty to it. You didn't blame the controls or the camera angle. You blamed your own slow reflexes.
That simplicity created a different kind of challenge. You had to master the physics of a single screen. You learned the patterns of ghosts in "Pac-Man" or the timing of jumps in "Pitfall." There was no filler. Every second was about the core gameplay loop. You played for a high score, not for an ending. You played because the act of playing was enough. It was a time when a single beep could feel like a victory, and a flickering sprite was a worthy opponent.
