Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis uses gen-AI, Amazon Games defends the tech

Amazon Games has confirmed that the upcoming mobile title "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis" will use generative artificial intelligence in its development, and the company is not backing down from the decision. In a recent interview, the general manager of Amazon Games addressed the controversy head-on, explaining why the studio chose to integrate the technology into the iconic franchise.

The GM stated that gen-AI is being used primarily to assist with asset creation and environmental design, not to replace core creative roles like writing or character animation. He argued that the tool allows the team to build more detailed and expansive levels for the mobile platform without ballooning development time or costs. "This is about efficiency and scale," he said. "We are not using it to generate story or dialogue. It helps our artists prototype and iterate faster."

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from fans, many of whom are protective of Lara Croft's legacy. Some worry that gen-AI could lead to generic or soulless content. In response, the GM emphasized that human oversight remains central to the process. Every AI-generated element is reviewed and refined by the art team to ensure it fits the tone and quality expected from a Tomb Raider title.

Amazon Games also pointed out that the industry is rapidly evolving, and they see gen-AI as a practical tool rather than a gimmick. The GM acknowledged the skepticism but insisted that the final product will speak for itself. "We understand the concerns," he said. "But we believe that when players see the game, they will focus on the experience, not the tools used to build it."

"Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis" is expected to launch later this year for mobile devices.
